‘Sakura Fan’ was inspired by the historic collection of Japanese paper fans in the Honolulu Museum of Modern Art. I thought the shape in itself was so appealing (they were exhibited as just the paper part of the fan), and imagined a canvas in a similar shape and enlarged. I ended up using board instead as it lends to the idea of the thinness of paper instead of the canvas, and was able to give the appearance of floating also by supporting the back with hidden blocks. It’s also obviously much easier to create different shaped substrates with board than with canvas (though looking into it, it’s not impossible!)
