‘Contemplating Hokusai’ is a multi-layerd fluid painting on wooden board, hand-crafted into an irregular shape to mimic that of a cave opening. As the name suggests, it is an ode to the Japanese master ukiyo-e printmaker Hokusai and the infamous Great Wave of Kanagawa. The gradient sky also mimics a common technique (bokashi) used in creating woodblock prints.

My aim was to create something of a window into another world from the security of the cave (or home, given it would be hanging on a wall in ones house). It is created with layers of paint, ink and paint skins collaged and comes ready to hang (floats about 3cm from wall).
